Russian River Valley

Pinot Noir

Our 2010 Russian River Valley cuvée draws from three highly regarded vineyards that contribute very different characteristics.  41% of the blend came from the Dutton-Lorenzo Vineyard that lies at the intersection of the Gravenstein Highway and Ross Station Road, outside Forestville, in the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley AVA,  The vineyard sits on Goldridge sandy loam with a gently sloping exposure, and the 115, 667, and 777 clones ripen to express delightful cherry and spice pinot noir character.

46% of this blend originates from the O'Neel Vineyard on Hall Road in the plain of Santa Rosa.  This vineyard sees warmer temperatures and less fog during the growing season, resulting in a fully ripened expression of pinot noir.  The O'Neel fruit contributes the signature lush mouthfeel of the best RRV pinot noirs.

Finally, we added 13% from the RLR vineyard lot featured in our Foray bottling, filling out the lush fruit profile with blueberry highlights.

Winemaker Notes

The Russian River Valley endured one of the most challenging years in 2010.  Late Spring showers extending into May impacted flowering, followed by a very cool summer.  A torrid heat wave struck in late August that shocked many vineyards and damaged fruit that couldn't handle the rapid change in conditions.  A second heat shock arrived at harvest time, forcing us to hustle and bring in all the fruit at once.

In spite of the difficult growing conditions and urgency of the crush, we are delighted with our 2010 RRV blend.  It is a medium dark, luscious example of classic Russian River Valley pinot noir.  Signature aromas of cherries, red plums, and asian spice abound, and on first taste, concentrated flavors of black cherry and boysenberry flow into a lengthy finish revealing hints of spiced plums.  Our RRV cuvée provides layers of flavor with classic structure that drinks well now and over the next 3-5 years. We call it our “meat and potatoes” Pinot, as it pairs perfectly with grilled meats and herb roasted potatoes.

  3. Prince of Pinot - Very good
“Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. This is quintessential Russian River Valley Pinot dialed back in intensity: unplugged if you will. Initially shy aromas pick up intensity over the time in the glass offering scents of Bing cherries and baking spices. Delicious, deep cherry flavor on a silky framework in an intensely flavored, mid weight, elegant style, finishing with an appealing slinkiness. Silky tannins make for immediate accessibility.”

  4. Wine Enthusiast - 89 points
“Juicy and brisk in acidity, this mouthwatering Pinot Noir is dry and silky. It has cool-climate cherry, pomegranate and cola flavors, with a nice mushroomy earthiness. Decant this elegant wine for several hours before opening it.”
