Silver Pines Vineyard

Pinot Noir

Overlooking Bennett Valley from an 900’ elevation on the northwestern flank of Sonoma Mountain, Silver Pines Vineyard is well sited to yield pinot noir of uncommon complexity.  Planted in 2000 by owners Norm and Carole Silverman, the vineyard has a cool microclimate dominated by lingering morning fog, warm afternoons, and reliable afternoon breezes as the fog courses back in through the Petaluma Gap by nightfall.

The loamy-clay volcanic soil on this site is particularly low in vigor, naturally limiting yields to about 2 tons per acre.  Bailiwick takes only the 115 clone from this vineyard, from a block that faces due south, providing the perfect orientation for even ripening in this cool location.  The care that Norm and Carole lavish on this vineyard consistently results in showcase fruit.

Winemaker Notes

In 2010, Sonoma Mountain saw a moist Spring with a succession of cool Summer days through late August.  Silver Pines Vineyard weathered the dramatic August heat spike better than lower elevation locations, allowing the fruit to remain on the vine through all of September.  Our patience was rewarded with fruit at the ideal stage of ripeness at harvest

Our 2010 Silver Pines greets you with pretty aromas of dark cherry, pie spice, and hints of sandalwood.  Bright flavors of tart cherries and cassis transition to a lengthy finish balanced between composed tannins and clean acidity, with nice cherry and toasty oak closing things out.  We recommend pairing the 2010 Silver Pines with grilled portabello mushrooms or pan seared duck breast.

  3. Prince of Pinot - Highest Rating “tremendous finishing power”
“Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with aromas of dark red fruits, cardamom spice and candied rose petal. Juicy red cherries and berries saturate the mid palate, embellished with spice and magic. Healthy, but non-aggressive fine-grain tannins add grip and support. Still young and takes its own sweet time opening up. Tremendous finishing power with fruit coming and going in waves. Cellar this another year or two and you will be happily infatuated.”

  4. Wine Enthusiast - 92 pts, “Cellar Selection” status
“The vineyard is a fine one, the fruit source for highly regarded Pinots from Tandem and Bailiwick’s own Silver Pines label. The wine is dry and silky, with strong acidity and tannins that currently render it tough to appreciate. Give it 5–6 years to let the raspberry and cola flavors integrate with the oak. “

  5. Pinot Report - 92 pts - subscription required
“Medium-deep ruby color; deep, spicy aromas with some dark cherry notes; deep, complex, dark cherry flavors with tannin and oak notes; rich texture; good structure and balance; long finish. Big, rich Pinot with nice complexity. Needs some time to open up, but will reward your patience.”
