Londer Vineyard

Pinot Noir

Larry and Shirlee Londer moved to the Anderson Valley from Albuquerque in 1999 to realize their dream of producing fine wines. They planted 17 acres of pinot noir on an exquisite site overlooking the Navarro River, and over the next 13 years built a reputation for growing premier fruit and crafting excellent wines. When we were offered fruit from the Londer Vineyard in 2011, we jumped at the chance.

The vineyard sits on hilly bench land that rolls gently down to the Navarro River, about 3.5 miles northwest of Philo. The loamy soils and sloped terrain provides excellent drainage for the vines. In 2011, we took clones 115 and 777 from the upper bench, where perfect exposure and orientation results in very concentrated flavors. The Londer pinot clusters were highly uniform and dense, holding the promise of a wine with great structure.

Winemaker Notes

The 2011 season at Londer was unseasonably cool, resulting in small, dense, perfectly shaped clusters. Good farming practices resulted in fruit that was in perfect condition and ready to pick before rains hit in early October.  For such a difficult year overall, this fruit was as good as any we have ever received, even in the best of years.

The 2011 Londer displays alluring scents of dried cherries and cedar. On the palate, lush flavors of cherry fruit and spice lead into a sustained finish supported by fine-grained tannins.  The Londer pairs beautifully with grilled pork chops topped with berry compote.

  1. Prince of Pinot - 88 points
“Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Shy, but pleasant aromas of black cherry and dried rose petals with a whiff of oak and clay. Middleweight flavors of juicy cherries and raspberries caressed by mildly chiseled tannins, finishing with some aromatic persistence. A solid, well-composed wine that currently doesn’t emote, but should improve with more time in the cellar.”

  2. Wine Enthusiast - 89 points
“Wonderfully aromatic in Bing cherry, this is a soft, supple Pinot with an oaky, tannic backbone that’s otherwise light in color and body. With just the right hint of rose petal happening, it’s pretty, too.”

  3. The Pinot Report - 92 points - subscription required
“Medium ruby color; earthy, complex cherry aromas; deep, rich cherry flavors with earthy, toasty notes; good structure and balance; long finish. Rich, deep Pinot with really nice texture.”
