Silver Pines Vineyard

Pinot Noir

Located at 900’ elevation overlooking nearby Bennett Valley, on the northwestern flank of Sonoma Mountain, Silver Pines Vineyard is well sited to yield pinot noir of uncommon complexity. Planted in 2000 by owners Norm and Carole Silverman, the vineyard has a cooler microclimate dominated by infusions of morning fog, followed by warm afternoons tempered with brisk afternoon breezes as the fog courses back in through the Petaluma Gap by nightfall.

The loamy-clay volcanic soils on this site are low in nutrients, naturally limiting yields to about 2.5 tons per acre. Bailiwick takes only the 115 clone from this vineyard, from a block that faces due south, providing the perfect orientation for even ripening in this cool location. The care that Norm and Carole lavish on this vineyard consistently results in showcase fruit.

Winemaker Notes

In 2011, Sonoma Mountain had a unseasonably cool summer, without significant heat spikes. Silver Pines Vineyard ripened steadily albeit slowly, and we decided to let the fruit hang all through September until rain threatened in October.  Timing was good and the clone 115 came in without any signs of stress and in great shape.

Our 2011 Silver Pines displays exotic aromas of dried roses, black tea and citrus. Bright flavors of tart cherries and cassis transition to a lengthy finish balanced between composed tannins and clean acidity, with nice cherry pie spice overtones extending into a lengthy finish. Try pairing the 2011 Silver Pines with a pan-seared duck breast or grilled portabello mushrooms.

  1. Prince of Pinot - 88 pts
“Moderately light reddish-purple hue in the glass. Reserved nose offering scents of red berries, dried rose petals and oak spice. Light weighted, even lean, and elegant, with flavors of spiced red cherries and berries backed by juicy acidity, finishing with a tangy citrus-imbued cherry note. A little more expressive the following day when tasted from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Could pick up intensity over time in bottle.”

  2. Wine Enthusiast - 91 pts
“Lush with fruit and bright with acidity, this tasty Pinot Noir features upfront flavors of raspberries, cola, red currants accented with cedar and exotic spices. It’s dry and mouth-filling, and should gradually shed fruit for earthiness as it matures over the next six years.”

  3. The Pinot Report - 92 pts
“Medium ruby color; deep, herbal cherry aromas with some pine notes; deep, tart cherry flavors with earthy, herbal notes; good structure and balance; long finish. Earthy and well structured; this Pinot needs time in the glass to open up.”
