Londer Vineyard

Pinot Noir

Larry and Shirlee Londer moved to the Anderson Valley from Albuquerque in 1999 to realize their dream of producing fine wines. They planted 17 acres of pinot noir on an exquisite site overlooking the Navarro River, and over the next 13 years built a reputation for growing premier fruit and crafting excellent wines. When we were offered fruit from the Londer Vineyard in 2011, we jumped at the chance.

The vineyard sits on hilly bench land that rolls gently down to the Navarro River, about 3.5 miles northwest of Philo. The loamy soils and sloped terrain provide excellent drainage for the vines. In 2012, we took clones 115 and 777 from the upper bench, where perfect exposure and orientation results in very concentrated flavors. The Londer pinot clusters were highly uniform and dense, holding the promise of a wine with great structure.

Winemaker Notes

Anderson Valley saw a return to optimal growing conditions in 2012, after two unusually cool seasons.  Lying in the "deep end" of the valley, the Londer Vineyard enjoyed long summer days filled with heat after the morning infusion of fog burned off.  Ripening proceeded gently into the fall, allowing us to time the pick perfectly.

The 2012 Londer shows remarkable balance in all aspects: fruit, oak, acidity, tannins, flavors, and finish.  Poised aromas of plum, rose petal, and sandalwood abound, leading into lovely cherry-laden flavors which coat your palate.  The wine finishes with nicely structured mouthfeel, supporting an expression of tart cherry and citrus peel on the finish.  We think grilled pork chops with berry compote would work nicely with the 2012 Londer.

  1. Prince of Pinot - 94 pts
“Moderately light cherry red color in the glass. The nose is deeply perfumed with fresh cherry aromas as wine cave and sous bois play in the background. Delicious spiced cherry flavor that attacks with purpose and finishes with uncommon intensity. The wine has impeccable balance with modest tannins and integrated acidity. Additional time in bottle has benefited this wine. It’s cherry season now, so this is an appropriate homage to spring.”

  2. The Pinot Report - 93 points - Smart Buy Designation - subscription required
“Medium ruby color; deep, floral, rose and cherry aromas; complex, deep, cherry and floral flavors dominate with earthy, toasty notes; good structure and balance; long finish. This is a well-balanced, complex Pinot with a lot of Deep End character”
