Sangiacomo Vineyard

Pinot Noir

For 2012 we obtained a small allotment of superb fruit from the Sangiacomo - Roberts Road vineyard.  Longtime Sonoma County growers with a stellar reputation, the Sangiacomo family farms some of the highest-regarded vineyards in the Carneros AVA.  A little further afield, the Roberts Road vineyard lies squarely in the Petaluma gap area of the Sonoma Coast AVA, at the base of Sonoma Mountain, where it benefits from the daily infusions of cooling air coming off the Pacific.

The Roberts Road vineyard is distinguished by its deep alluvial soils, laid down over thousands of years by Copeland Creek.  The sand and cobble strata provide incredibly rich footing for the vines, and enable the fruit to hang a very long time without the vines shutting down.  From a block lying atop the old river wash, we got both Swan and clone 777, a beautiful combination of power, fruit, and spice.

Winemaker Notes

2012 will be remembered as a perfect growing season in Sonoma County, with no heat spikes, significant rain, or weather upsets.  These gentle conditions and the Roberts Road soils allowed us to let the fruit hang and ripen much longer than normal.

Opulent aromas of black cherry, sage, and cardamom jump out of the glass, heralding the rich legacy of 2012 and the Roberts Road site.  The entry is lush, with mouthfuls of spicy cherry compote leading to a lengthy finish of polished tannins and ripe fruit.  We like the pairing of our 2012 Sangiacomo with braised lamb shanks with white beans, and enjoying slow food and fine wine at your own pace.

  1. Prince of Pinot - 92 pts
“Moderately light ruby color in the glass. Highly fragrant nose with aromas of cherry, spice, dark chocolate and toasty oak. Fresh and vivid cherry fruit on the attack, very expansive in the mouth, embellished with generous oak, finishing with persistent spice-dusted cherry goodness. A very appealing wine that is ready for enjoyment now.”

  2. The Pinot Report - 93 points - Make Room in the Cellar - subscription required
“Medium-deep ruby color; big, full dark cherry flavors with forest floor and spice notes; some tannin and oak notes; good structure and balance; long finish. Big and structured, this Pinot also has some great complexity, textbook from the Sangiacomo Vineyard. ”
