2013

Foray

Pinot Noir

For the 2013 Foray we found a superb vineyard located on Quail Haven Lane, off Barlow Lane, in the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley.  The new owners had just purchased the vineyard and, being new grape growers, looked to long time vineyard manager Eric Neil for continued excellence in cultivating the vines to their full potential.

The vineyard lies about halfway between Graton and Sebastopol, along the low ridge east of Atascadero Creek. This ridge is all Goldridge sandy loam, renowned for producing outstanding pinot noir in this cool microclimate. The upper half of the vineyard is Swan selection, and with the lower half Pommard.  Vine spacing is a dense 5 x 2 on a very gentle slope trending downhill to the west.

Winemaker Notes

2013 was the driest calendar year in California history, which meant a mild, dry spring throughout flowering and set. The vineyard cropped abundantly, so with its tight planting we aggressively dropped fruit to restrict yields per acre and ensure optimum phenolic development. Both the Swan and Pommard clone responded with gorgeous fruit.  To further concentrate flavors, we saignéed both lots of wine prior to fermentation.

Aromas of ripe cherry, cola, and cardamom jump out of the glass, signaling the identity of this site in the Russian River Valley.  The entry is lush, leading to a cascade of spicy cherry pie with citrus notes that carry over into a lengthy, sustained finish.  The overall impression is of a bright, flavorful RRV pinot, with medium body, good acid balance, and fine-grained tannins. We like the idea of pairing of our 2013 Foray with grilled lamb loin chops, and enjoying slow food and fine wine at your own pace.
