Silver Pines Vineyard

Pinot Noir

Located at 900’ elevation overlooking nearby Bennett Valley, on the northwestern flank of Sonoma Mountain, Silver Pines Vineyard is well sited to yield pinot noir of uncommon complexity.  Planted in 2000 by owners Norm and Carole Silverman, the vineyard has a cooler microclimate dominated by infusions of morning fog, followed by warm afternoons tempered with brisk afternoon breezes as the fog courses back in through the Petaluma Gap by nightfall.

The loamy-clay volcanic soils on this site are low in nutrients, naturally limiting yields to about 2.5 tons per acre.  Bailiwick takes only the 115 clone from this vineyard, from a block that faces due south, providing the perfect orientation for even ripening in this cool location.  The care that Norm and Carole lavish on this vineyard consistently results in showcase fruit.

Winemaker Notes

2013 saw a return to normal growing conditions on the flanks of Sonoma Mountain.  Consistent morning fog and late afternoon winds moving through the Petaluma Gap bracketed warm days filled with even heat.  The Silver Pines fruit ripened slowly and we were able to set the pick date to achieve optimal balance in the fruit.

The 2013 Silver Pines presents beautiful aromas of dark cherry, rose petal, and black tea, showing complexity borne from the superior growing season.  The wine has a lush entry, with ripe cherry and pomegranate flavors flooding the palate, supported by fine yet firm tannins that carry the fruit into the finish.  Try pairing the 2013 Silver Pines with duck confit, and wait for the magic to happen.
