2013

Sonoma Coast

Pinot Noir

Vineyard Our 2013 Sonoma Coast cuvée features grapes from four sought after vineyards, which we meticulously blended to create our tribute to pinot from Sonoma and Marin County's cooler western vineyards. The Juul Vineyard in the cool Green Valley of the Russian River Valley is situated on classic Goldridge soils, and contains both Pommard and Swan selection, which in this cool location yield very fresh, fruit forward profiles.

Two Marin County vineyards, Kendric and Chileno Valley, lie just west of Petaluma, and are influenced by the very cool wind and fog that course through the coastal gap in the hills to the west.  These two sites sit a mere 8 miles from the Pacific, and consequently exhibit typical traits of cherries, rhubarb, and loam.

Finally, from the northwestern flank of Sonoma Mountain and exposed to cooling air from the Petaluma Gap, the Silver Pines Vineyard contributes a small amount of deep cherry flavors and dusky notes of black tea.

Winemaker Notes

2013 provided generally benign growing conditions, although water stress was apparent in the second year of drought, and yet each of these vineyards responded with excellent fruit.  With the warm dry spring the whole season moved forward two weeks, so we were picking grapes much earlier than usual.  Ripening was easy and controlled, so we were able to harvest at the exact time where flavors peaked.

The 2013 Sonoma Coast offers an alluring nose of dark red fruit, pie spices, and sous bois, with hints of toasty oak.  The flavors of dark plum, cherry, and cedar are round, delicate and generous all at once, with fine grained tannins lending support and length through the finish.  We suggest pairing our 2013 Sonoma Coast with salmon grilled on a cedar plank with a brown sugar, ginger, and chipotle rub, and go evangelize your friends that only drink white wine with fish.
