Rosé of Cabernet Franc

Our 2014 rosé is produced from the beautiful cabernet franc off of Bill Nachbaur’s Alegría Vineyard.  Cabernet franc has been used in the Loire Valley of France for both red and rosé for generations, and the Alegría fruit fits the profile we sought for producing a cab franc rosé.  We picked at 22 brix, and even at that relatively low brix level, the grapes were full of vibrant flavors.

Winemaker Notes

Choosing Cabernet Franc fruit for our 2014 rosé required a different approach than that used in the past with Pinot Noir.   Rather than saignée juice from the main lot destined for red wine, we instead selected a ton of fruit and processed it separately.  We sorted the bunches and then destemmed and crushed the grapes into insulated vessels for cold-soaking. After approximately 26 hrs soaking, we pressed the juice off the skins into a stainless steel tank and inoculated with our favorite rosé yeast.  As the fermentation progressed we were astounded with the aromatics of watermelon and strawberry.  Fermentation proceeded at cool temperatures for over 3 weeks. Once completed, the wine sat on the lees for 3 more months to build mouthfeel. In late January we racked it off the lees.  The wine was bottled in April 2015.

Our 2014 Rosé of Cabernet Franc presents a gorgeous pale salmon color in the glass. The aromas are nuanced, suggesting cut watermelon and sweet pea blossoms, with hints of raspberries and apple.  There's nice balance across the palate, with full mouthfeel braced with racy acidity, and a crisp, lingering, dry finish that will leave you wanting another taste.
