Michael Michaud’s vineyard is an extraordinary location for cultivating pinot noir.  Lying at 1600’ above the Salinas Valley floor and at the front door of Pinnacles National Monument, the vineyard is extreme by typical pinot noir standards.  However, it lies on one of the only places in California where decomposed granite and limestone are present at the surface, creating a superb soil profile for pinot noir, similar to that of Burgundy.  Michael, whose experience in the Chalone AVA is unrivaled, has farmed his vineyard alongside the scorpions and coyotes since the early 90‘s.

The limited rainfall and challenging conditions stunt the vines, causing the grapes to be smaller and thick-skinned, resulting in the structure and spice for which Chalone is known. Mid-day temperatures can reach above 100F for days at a time, yet at nighttime plunge 50-60 degrees ensuring that acid levels stay high through harvest. These conditions and Michael's experienced hand ensure that crop yield will be low, but in exchange for quantity, the quality is among the best.
